One juror. Two exhibits.
Change his mind.
In a Jury File you argue with eleven jurors who hold opinions and can be moved by evidence. Here is one of them, over a scenario written only for this page, running the same engine the real cases run. He opens guilty. Volume will not move him. Evidence might.
The bundle
Exhibit 1 · The stair at Number 14, measured
Nine steps, rising 5 feet 9 inches. The ninth tread is 1 1/4 inches shallower than the other eight and the nosing is worn smooth. There is no handrail on the wall side. Measured by the district surveyor on 6 March.
Exhibit 2 · The boot, and what was on it
The deceased's right boot. The leather sole is worn to a shine at the ball of the foot, and a smear of green household soap runs across it. A tin of the same soap stood on the second step from the top, where the stair was being washed that evening.
The charge: That the accused pushed Albert Crane down the stair at Number 14 on the night of 3 March.
What the Crown must prove: That Albert Crane's fall was caused by another person, and not by the stair.
What the Crown must prove: That Albert Crane's fall was caused by another person, and not by the stair.
